CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
ARRA base pavement project
Last month, Charleston AFB was awarded a paving project funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The first phase of this project replaced asphalt pavements in the Building 900 area to correct severe pavement cracking, which could begin to pose a potential hazard to munitions transport vehicles. Work on this phase began immediately after the award and is already complete.
The second phase of the project will replace a severely cracked section of the sidewalk along Davis Street, connecting the Charleston Club to the dorm complex. The new sidewalk will also be raised to allow the installation of curb and gutter between the sidewalk and the adjacent roadway. Work on this phase is currently underway.
The third phase will provide a guardrail along the northwest corner of Graves Street and Simpson Street to correct a condition identified by the 437th Airlift Wing Safety Office as a potential hazard to traffic traveling southbound on Graves Street. This work is also currently underway.
The final phase of the project will repair and restripe the bowling alley parking lot and is scheduled to begin in the near future.
