Construction Update

437th Civil Engineer Squadron

Base Picnic Grounds

In addition to hosting the base picnic and annual Earth Day celebration, the Charleston AFB picnic grounds are used every day by both military and civilian personnel for going-away celebrations, physical training, squadron picnics and recreation. In addition, the picnic grounds are a well known place for Airmen and their family members to jog, enjoy sports, play on the playground, lie out in the sun, or simply relax and have a family picnic.
Besides providing maintenance for the picnic grounds, funds have also been invested in changes that will benefit the entire base community. A number of big improvements are coming later this summer in a project which will repave the parking lot, provide new pavilions, resurface and repaint the tennis and basketball courts, replace the tennis and basketball court fencing, construct a bocce ball court, replace softball field backstops and horseshoe pits and install additional water fountains along the jogging trail and within the picnic area.

In addition to improving the site's appearance, this project helps support the Critical Days of Summer initiative by adding water fountains to help runners stay hydrated and better fight off heat related illnesses. Resurfacing the courts will help prevent unwanted injuries from cracks in the pavement surface and replacing fences and gates will help keep areas in better shape for future use.
