Construction update: Fitness and Sports Center expansion

This month sees the completion of nearly 18 months of construction at the Fitness and Sports Center, providing long-awaited improvements to a facility constructed in 1959 and has not seen a major addition since 1993.

The most notable change is a new 5,700 square foot addition housing 65 pieces of cardiovascular training equipment. Even with the increased number of machines, users will immediately notice a dramatic improvement in the layout and spacing of the training equipment. The new addition also provides a large warm-up and stretching area and a private fitness counseling area.

Beyond the expansion, the project provides new carpeting and wall coverings in portions of the facility as well as major renovations to the women's locker room. Communications and data services to the Fitness Center were upgraded allowing for the possibility of making several entertainment options, such as, Internet TV, cable TV and more available at each workstation in the future.

The newly completed construction enhances the overall exercise environment, provides additional available fitness services, supports the Air Force fitness concept of a more holistic approach to personal health and wellness and presents a quality facility with available training options rivaling or surpassing private-sector fitness facilities in the Charleston area.
