CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
To keep the base community's children safe on the way to school, the 437th Security Forces Squadron has opened the Lambs Elementary School gate.
Security forces opened the gate Aug. 18, and it will remain open until the school closes for summer break next year.
The gate is open three times each day to accommodate varying school schedules from 6:50 to 8:15 a.m., 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. and 4 to 4:15 p.m. A security forces member will man the gate while it is open to ensure a safe environment for children and to prevent unauthorized access onto the base.
"The well-being of our children is a security forces squadron top priority," said Dwayne Gunther, 437 SFS operations officer. "Our goal this year is to have a safe and incident-free school year."
Security forces will not open the gate on weekends or school-district down days.
The annual reoccurrence of the gate opening also brings with it new scenery this year. Since last year, new additions have been made to beautify the grounds and provide added features for students to enjoy.
Charleston's 437th Civil Engineer Squadron has cleaned up, landscaped and installed bicycle racks in the area as well. New benches and tables are scheduled to be installed next to the gate.
