Junior enlisted invited to Oktoberfest

By Master Sgt. Sean Houlihan 437th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Airmen and junior NCOs are once again being thanked by the Team Charleston Top 3 association during this year's Oktoberfest at the dormitory complex Oct. 16 beginning at 11 a.m.

The Top 3 will provide food, drinks and entertainment for junior-enlisted members during the annual event.

"As we know recognition is important to growth and development, job satisfaction and progression. Oktobfest is about recognizing and acknowledging what Airmen are bringing to the fight," said Master Sgt. Christine Williams, event coordinator and a 437th Medical Operations Squadron Airman. "Sometimes 'great job' or 'thank you' seem insignificant, however, it goes a long way. It lets our people know that we care about them and they are important to the mission. That is the message we want to send to our junior NCOs and Airmen: We see what you do, we couldn't do it without you, you are important and we appreciate you."

The Top 3 has been sponsoring the annual event for four years and has grown in popularity and support from Top 3 members each year.

Sergeant Williams said she hopes Airmen will leave the event knowing their leaders care about them, that they are important and are appreciated. She also this is a time for them to get out of their work center, relax, have a meal and participate in some fun activities.

"I want (Team Charleston Airmen) to know that I think they are the best and I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work for," she said.

During the event Sergeant Williams said, Top 3 members along with the Chief's and First Sergeant's Council will take on junior enlisted Airmen in volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, ultimate football and Frisbee, "Warrior's Challenge" obstacle course and various other sporting events. Jokingly adding the 'old folks' will easily defeat the younger Airmen in the events.

The menu for the event includes hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwursts, baked beans and chips.

Besides sporting events there will be a DJ playing music with the capability for people to karaoke, mementos will be passed out memorializing the event and hourly drawing for prizes.

With just over a week left before the event, the committee is still looking for senior NCOs and company grade officers to help with running sporting events, set-up and tear. Sergeant Williams said that even if senior NCOs or CGOs are unable to assist the best way is to work for their Airmen and encourage them to participate as the event is being held in their honor.
