CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Children from the Child Development and Youth Centers here received a very important lesson Dec. 1 in giving back to the local community.
With two local designers on hand to help, the children created three holiday wreaths, which will be on display at The Shops at Charleston Place during the 4th Annual Festival of Wreaths event Dec. 10 at the Palmetto Café in downtown Charleston.
Following the event, the wreaths the children designed will be donated to the Medical University of South Carolina where they will hang in the atrium of the Children's Hospital, said Beth Cleveland, a Festival of Wreaths committee member.
While the children's wreaths won't be auctioned off, guests at the event will have 14 other locally designed wreaths they can bid on during the silent auction.
Last year's Festival of the Wreaths event raised nearly $4,000 and 100 percent of the proceeds from this year's event will go directly to the MUSC Children's hospital, which treats more than 100,000 children on an annual basis.
"We're thrilled to be selected as the beneficiary of the Festival of Wreaths event for the fourth year," said Wanda Bazemore, director of major events at the Medical University of South Carolina. "Through these charitable endeavors, we're able to do everything from funding research to providing patients with activities to make their stay a little more enjoyable."
By participating in the wreath workshop, the children were able to give back to the community and to the children who ware currently receiving medical care at MUSC Children's Hospital, which in the past have included a few of Team Charleston's very own family members .
