Warrior of the Week: Staff Sgt. Jared Calhoun

628th Air Base Wing command post

Staff Sgt. Jared Calhoun is a member of the 628th Air Base Wing command post and has been stationed at Joint Base Charleston for two years.

He is currently deployed to the Middle East where he assigned to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing command post.

In his deployed unit, Sergeant Calhoun is a command post controller and his primary duties include mission monitoring, emergency actions, aircrew management and base-wide alerting. He is also the equipment custodian, client support administrator and unit travel representative.

"At my deployed location, we support Operation Iraqi Freedom and at the wing level, we work under Air Mobility Division, following the missions built for our base," explained Sergeant Calhoun. "This differs greatly from my previous deployment where I loaded missions into our command and control systems for all other bases to monitor."

According to Sergeant Calhoun, what he likes best about his job is how much interaction he gets with the outside world.

"It is very unique, having the opportunity to interact with so many different agencies who rely on us to give prompt and accurate information," he said.

This "warrior of the week" hails from Moncks Corner, S.C., and joined the Air Force in 2003.

"I wanted to leave Moncks Corner and take advantage of the educational opportunities the Air Force had to offer," Sergeant Calhoun said. "I am currently a student of Liberty University's distant learning program."

Upon returning from his deployment his future goals include completing his bachelor's degree and becoming a certified teacher before 2013.

While deployed, Sergeant Calhoun enjoys playing flag football with a team he slated as a "playoff caliber team," during his free time.

"Sergeant Calhoun is an exceptional noncommissioned officer," stated Tech. Sgt. John Downard, console operations NCO in charge. "He is a phenomenal Air Force leader and manager. He is highly skilled and professional at all times."
