Defense Personal Property System: A new way to move

By Michael Simmons Traffic Management chief

Joint Base Charleston service members, along with all Air Force Airmen, will soon find moving with their families a much more pleasant experience using the Defense Personal Property System.

DPS is a full-service tool designed to make your moving experience less stressful. It was developed to improve the quality of service to our valuable customers and your families through an integrated, paperless system. It carries out the goals of the Department of Defense initiative to improve the move experience and streamline the move process.

DPS is the product of lessons learned from four previous pilot programs and the engine of the new personal property shipping program, the one-stop source for managing your personal property move. It's a centralized Web application publicly accessible via the following website: www.move.mil from any location (work, home, even your favorite vacation spot, etc).

Using DPS you can:
- Create and submit your application for your move
- File a claim directly with the Transportation Service Provider
- Receive Full Replacement Value Protection
- On-line shipment tracking
- Empowered communication with the TSP

In order to utilize DPS Airmen will need to request a user id and logon by clicking on the "Register DPS Account" link located under the "DOD Customer" tab on the move.mil website:

As a first time user, you will need to view information relevant to your branch of service. This is done by clicking on the branch of service link. Once you read that information, you can move on to the counseling module by clicking on the tab at the top, marked 'Counseling.' Step-by-step instructions on how to create a shipment application are provided

The counseling module will walk you through capturing all the information required for the shipping office to process your application. Once you complete your application and hit the submit button, you still must provide copies of your orders to the shipping office. Once you have submitted all required documentation, you can sit back and wait for the selected TSP to contact you about your move.

If you or your designated agent do not have a computer at home, and cannot access one at work, school or your public library, you can still come into your nearest shipping office and a skilled counselor will be glad to assist you.

DPS will provide the convenience of 24/7 access to personal property shipment information and a conduit for a direct relationship between DOD members and TSPs throughout the entire moving process.

The Traffic Management Office at Joint Base Charleston will be holding several town-hall type briefings to provide information on this new process. Meanwhile, for additional information, please visit the DPS homepage at www.move.mil or contact the TMO office at 963-2253.
