JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Feb. 27, 1942 - During the battle of the Java Sea, Allied Naval Forces attacked a Japanese invasion convoy.

Feb. 28, 1959 - USS Strong rescued 13 Arab fishermen from Bahrain when their fishing boats floundered in a storm.

March 1, 1942 - U-656 became the first German submarine of World War II to be sunk by naval air (VP-82).

March 2, 1899 - An act of Congress created the rank of Admiral of the Navy for George Dewey.

March 3, 1871 - The Navy Medical Corps was established.

March 4, 1925 - Congress authorized restoration of USS Constitution.

March 5, 1943 - USS Bogue began the first anti-submarine operations by an escort carrier.
