JB Charleston enters HURCON 4

Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs

Joint Base Charleston has activated Hurricane Condition 4 alert status at 8:40 a.m. Sept 1, 2019, due to weather conditions projected by Hurricane Dorian.

Hurricane Condition IV is declared when the forecast calls for the arrival of 50-knot (58 mph) sustained winds or greater within 72 hours.

Base personnel and residents should begin preparing for the possible arrival of the storm and assess their own personal hurricane preparedness. JB Charleston personnel and families should be prepared to evacuate in the event that an evacuation order is given. Members who leave before the commander’s evacuation announcement may not be reimbursed for travel expenses. An evacuation order has NOT been given at this time.

During HURCON 4, JB Charleston will begin precautionary preparations to secure property that may be exposed to storm conditions and plan for the possible evacuation of aircraft, personnel and their families. Base leadership is working closely with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division and local authorities to coordinate hurricane response efforts. Additionally, teams will begin to store outdoor items that could become projectiles in a storm.
