JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 628th Air Base Wing celebrated an important milestone Jan. 31.
Members of the 628th ABW and local community members congregated to celebrate 15 years of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the nation's defense. .
The 628th ABW activated Jan. 8, 2010, and has since played a vital role in supporting the U.S. Air Force's global reach and protecting American interests at home and abroad as the DoD’s premier power projection platform. Stationed at Joint Base Charleston, the wing supports a diverse range of organizations, including the 437th Airlift Wing, the 315th Airlift Wing, and numerous Navy, Army, and Coast Guard mission partners.
Over the past 15 years, the 628th ABW has demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing environment. From supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM to participating in humanitarian assistance and disaster response efforts, the wing has consistently demonstrated its commitment to serving the nation and its people.
"Today, we celebrate not only the wing's anniversary but also the dedication, hard work, and sacrifices of our Airmen and their families through the years," said U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Parker, 628th ABW commander. "We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and we carry their legacy forward today.”
The anniversary celebration, attended by local mayors, wing personnel, and their families, featured a ceremony, Charleston trivia, a historical perspective from Josh Mayes, the 628th ABW historian. The wing's history and achievements were also showcased through a series of exhibits and displays highlighting its major milestones and accomplishments.
The wing guidon does not have battle streamers and a storied legacy like other units in the Air Force, but the 628th ABW’s scope of responsibility is unmatched, the historian said.
As the 628th ABW looks to the future, it remains committed to its core values of excellence, integrity and service. The wing is poised to continue playing a critical role in supporting the nation's defense and protecting American interests for years to come.
The 628th ABW’s 15-year anniversary is a testament to the enduring spirit of its Airmen and their unwavering commitment to serving the nation.
