South Carolina Stingrays Military Appreciation Night: A military appreciation night on Friday, Nov. 5 will be hosted by the Stingrays ice hockey team for their season opener. Special military only pricing for this event will be in effect for a groups of 10 or more. Pricing includes a lower level ticket close to the ice, all you can eat buffet, a Stingrays hat, the group's name in lights during the game on the stadium video board, as well as a welcome announcement over the public address system. Halloween Poster Contest: Hey kids ages 3-14...Get ready for the NSA's Library's Halloween Poster Contest! Pick up a poster at Marrington school libraries or the base library beginning Oct. 1. Military Spouse 101 Workshop: During this workshop new spouses are introduced to the many aspects of the military, i.e. the culture, the mobile lifestyle, rates/ranks, Chain of Command, core values, etc. Benefits and resources that are available to spouses are also explored, i.e. educational opportunities, financial aid assistance, job search, resume writing, volunteer opportunities, etc. The workshop is interactive and it's fun! Not only are the spouses getting great information, they network to build support systems and friendships that can last a lifetime! MWR Halloween event offers fundraising opportunities: Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is offering your command or affiliated organization an excellent fundraising opportunity by participating in our Halloween Carnival & Haunted Hayride at Marrington Plantation, Oct. 29 from 5 to 9 p.m. This community event will feature a Haunted Hayride, "Trunk or Treat" candy give-aways, games, costume contests, and lots more! Commands and affiliated organizations are invited to participate in the areas of food concessions, game booth operations or haunted house and hayride operations at one of MWR's most popular events. This is one of few authorized fundraising opportunities per year offered to commands and affiliated organizations so don't miss out! Space is limited and available on a first-come-first-served basis. "Trunk or Treat" at Halloween Festival: What is "Trunk or Treat"? It's a unique way to provide a safe family environment for Treat or Treaters. Participants decorate their cars, trunks, or truck beds and are parked in a designated spot to prepare to hand out candy to the "Trunk or Treaters." Participants can decorate with a Halloween theme such as spiders, pumpkins, etc., or select a unique theme that suits their personality. As part of this year's Halloween Carnival, MWR is sponsoring a "Trunk or Treat" activity to be held at Marrington Plantation on Oct. 29, beginning at 5 p.m. Participants will be asked to provide enough candy for all Trunk or Treaters. Volunteer needed for pre-schooler's program: Do you have a couple of hours per week to spend volunteering at the library for our pre-school program? This program is designed for pre-schoolers with story time, crafts and a lot in interaction. Parent or guardian must attend. NSA Library is a computer "Hotspot:" The NSA Library is a computer "hotspot" for wireless-ready laptop work and surfing the web from a patron's personal computer. Some service providers charge for this convenience; it's free at the Library. Just show up with your wireless-ready laptop, equipped with a network card, find yourself a seat anywhere in the building, and go to work!
MWR's Recycling Department calling for all metal: Containers for empty aluminum cans are located throughout the NSA. Aluminum cans are the mainstay of the recycling program, however, all types of metal are accepted. If you have heavy metal products that need to be picked up, the Recycling Department at 743-0510. Remember, all recycling proceeds go towards enhancing your MWR facilities and programs!
Stroller Rollers offers "Fitness for Mom, fun for baby!:" Attention new mothers! Now there is a way to get fit while spending quality time with your baby! With the Stroller Rollers program, you'll shape up with a power walk and body sculpting while strolling with your baby. It's a great chance to interact with other new moms! Classes meet at the NSA Gymnasium on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Classes are free. Materials are provided. DVDs wanted: Do you have DVDs you have viewed that are just setting around gathering dust? Why not donate them to the library so others can enjoy them. Drop them by the library or use the after- hours book drop box.
Become a Child Development Homes Provider: Do you like children? Need extra cash? The Child Development Homes program offers you a chance to provide childcare in your home. The options available to Child Development Home providers are numerous and include:
· Before/after school care
· Part-time/drop-In care
· Full-time care for infants, toddlers, or pre-school ages
· Evening and weekend care
As a CDH provider, you determine your fees and hours. Although the Navy determines the maximum childcare ratios, you can choose and interview families that have children fitting the hours and ages you are looking for. If interested or for more information, please call 764-7347.
Parents...need a night out?: The Child Development Homes program has certified providers available for Friday night child care. Call the CDH office for a list of available providers at 764-7347.
Resale vehicle lot: Selling a car, truck, camper, boat or motorcycle? MWR's "Hot Deals on Wheels" used vehicle lot offers the only authorized place to display vehicles for sale on Naval Support Activity. The lot is located near Red Bank Road in the New Wave Pool parking lot. The cost is $8 per week (military and immediate family) and $10 per week (retirees and DOD personnel). Reservations and payment are accepted at the ITT Office. Call 764-2120.
"Early Bird" drop-off service: The Auto Skills Center, located on Fletcher Street, offers "Early Bird" drop-off service for your convenience. Vehicles in need of service can be dropped off prior to our normal operating hours using the key drop-box, located outside the facility. Patrons can simply fill out the provided envelope with an explanation of the mechanic services needed, place the vehicle keys in the envelope, and drop them in the box. Then all you have to do is call the Auto Skills Center during their normal operating hours to receive an estimate or to provide any additional information concerning the work needed. At the end of your busy workday, stop by and pick up your serviced vehicle and "off you go!"

Flag football registration: Intramural Flag Football registration is underway at the MWR Athletics Office and Sam's Gym. This will be a 7-on-7 league using NIRSA rules. Players must form their own teams, with a minimum of seven players and a maximum of 20. Games will be played at the Menriv Soccer/Football Field beginning Nov. 2. A coaches' meeting will be held on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. at the MWR Athletics Office (Bldg. 725). The deadline to register is Oct. 22. For more information, call 764-7530 or e-mail greg.lutz@navy.mil.

Join the Redbank Plantation Golf Association: The Redbank Plantation Golf Association invites you to become a member at a cost of only $20 per year. "Stepping Stones" pre-school reading program begins: Registration is underway for the "Stepping Stones" pre-school program at the NSA Library. This is a free program for pre-school children to enjoy stories, songs and crafts. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program will be coordinated by volunteer, Leah Crane, and will be held on Thursday mornings from 10:30-11:30 a.m. For more information call 764-7900.
New CPR & First Aid class dates announced: Learn to save a life by taking an American Red Cross CPR course. All classes will be instructed by certified American Red Cross instructors and are held at the MWR Athletics Office (Bldg 725) on the following dates:

· Saturday, Jan. 8. 2011 (register by January 5)
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. Pre-registration is required and is accepted at Sam's Gym (764-4173). Class sizes are limited. Call for more details.
Judo & Jujitsu classes - Free to active duty military: Get in shape, build self confidence, and learn self defense with MWR Judo & Jujitsu classes! Classes are held in the group exercise room (Bldg 725) and are free to active duty military ($2 per class for all others). Judo classes are offered Mon. and Wed. from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Jujitsu classes are offered on the first Friday of each month from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m and on Sat. from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. For more information, contact Nancy Haynsworth at 764-4067.
Youth Karate offered at Youth Center: Registration is currently underway for Youth Karate Classes at the Weapons Station Youth Center. Classes will be offered on Mondays from 4:15 - 5:00 p.m. at the Teen Center (Bldg. 777), located next to the New Wave Pool. This is a martial arts themed skill building and self-protection course provided by Coastal Kenpo Karate and Martial Arts. The course, which is open to kids, ages 5-14, is designed to enhance fundamental skills that your child is currently developing, such as discipline, respect, teamwork, coordination and ability to focus. Registration is $50 (includes uniform) and then $30 each additional month. Classes are instructed by "Mr. Nick" Dreiling, a third degree black belt with over 20 years experience.
Free MWR Fitness Classes: Did you know that MWR offers group exercise classes free of charge to active duty military and only $2 per class for all other patrons? A variety of classes such as yoga, spinning, step & sculpt and more are available in the Group Exercise Room, located in Bldg. 725 next to the Post Office. Road Rage 5K road race: It's beautiful weather for a run! Join us for the "Road Rage" 5k Road Race which winds through Navy Housing on the last Wednesday of each month. The race begins at 7 a.m. All runners should meet outside of Sam's Gym Fitness Center on Jefferson Street. The race is free to all participants and is open to all eligible patrons of JB Charleston. No registration is required. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in the following age categories: Overall, 18-22, 23-28, 29-34, 35-39, and 40 & over. RV/boat storage area: MWR operates the RV/boat storage area located on Fletcher Street (across from the Housing Office). There are currently 54 sites available at a cost of $35 per month (paid quarterly). Reservations are handled at our Auto Skills Center located on Fletcher Street, directly across from the storage site.
Camping is a breeze with help from the Outdoor Adventure Center: Your Outdoor Adventure Center has everything you'll need to enjoy the great outdoors! Tents that will accommodate from one to five people, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, lanterns, two-burner stoves and coolers are all available for rent at a nominal fee. Kayaks, canoes and mountain bikes are also available to make your weekend get-away complete. The Outdoor Adventure Center is located in the Building 1700 on Fletcher Street, across from The Dive. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Sundays and holidays. Disc Golf Course: There's more going on these days at Locklear Park than just baseball and softball. A 9-hole disc golf course runs throughout the park with many varied and challenging holes. Disc golf is played just like traditional golf, with a Frisbee-like disc substituting for the golf ball & club and a basket acts as the golf hole. Access to the course is available any time during daylight hours. The discs are available for check-out at the Outdoor Adventure Center at no charge.
OAC Rock Climbing Wall: Nothing offers stress relief quite like exercise, and one of the most fun and exciting ways to get a total body workout here on the Naval Support Activity, is at the Outdoor Adventure Center's climbing wall. The climbing wall stands 30 ft. high and offers many different climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty. Whether you are a beginner or an experience climber, the OAC has a climbing program to suit you.
