January 31, 2020 — Nearly 50 years ago, astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins made the journey back from the moon onboard Apollo 11. The men passed into Earth’s atmosphere and made a splash landing in the Pacific Ocean. This was the end of the astronauts’ journey, but it was only the beginning for rescue and recovery teams. Airman exhibits resiliency and gains strength through sharing his story
January 27, 2020 — According to The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, suicide is the leading cause of death in the U.S. military, surpassing accidents, car crashes and combat. Although veterans make up only 10 percent of the population, they account for nearly one in five suicides in the country. Staff Sgt. Drake Dougherty, an inbound cargo supervisor assigned to the 437th Aerial Port Squadron, almost became part of that statistic, but instead, chooses to share his journey to overcome depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts with others which he believes makes a positive impact not only on his life, but on the lives of those with whom he shares his story. ... Two JB Charleston K9s retire after years of being good boys

Staff Sgt. Timothy Merrigan, a military working dog handler assigned to the 628th Security Forces Squadron, his K-9 Tze, Staff Sgt. Jenings Casey, 628th SFS MWD training supervisor and his K-9 Elmo, pose after Tze and Elmo's retirement ceremony, Nov. 22, 2019 at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. Elmo served honorably for 10 years before retiring due to age and back problems while Tze's career was cut short at seven years due to back problems of his own. JB Charleston conducts annual mobile aircraft fire training
May 29, 2019 — Joint Base Charleston’s fire department teamed with the Crash Fire Rescue Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., to conduct Joint Mobile Aircraft Fire Training May 27-31, 2019, at JB Charleston’s Fire Department training grounds. This training not only fulfilled an annual requirement for mission capable firefighters but it also highlighted the importance of collaboration between joint mission partners throughout the Lowcountry. International Chemical Weapons Convention Treaty tested at JB Charleston
May 15, 2019 — Joint Base Charleston Air Base hosted a week-long Chemical Weapons Convention exercise Jan. 7-11, 2019. The purpose of the exercise was to test the response of Air Force Major Command Base Assistance Teams here should the U.S. receive an international challenge inspection under the Chemical Weapons Convention Treaty. A similar exercise was conducted May 16, 2019, at Naval Weapons Station Charleston, Joint Base Charleston, S.C. “This annual training tests our ability to respond to a challenge inspection under the treaty. During the exercise and in real world, the Air Force would be the lead,” said Kimbrell. “The Army and Navy would only assist if the Naval Weapons Station were included in the final inspection perimeter.” ...
