Welcome to Joint Base Charleston!

The housing branch provides guidance, direction and assistance for access to safe, quality, affordable housing in and around the JB Charleston community. It manages government owned housing for unaccompanied enlisted members and manages all assets related to the privatized housing community located on JB Charleston.

JB Charleston base housing was privatized on October 1, 2011 under the authority of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative in the 1996 National Defense Authorization Act. The goal of privatization is to provide military families safe, quality, affordable and well-maintained housing in a community where they will choose to live. We are very excited about all the new homes and renovations currently going on it our housing area.

Please take a moment to visit their website to see for yourself the great homes and amenties JB Charleston Family Housing has to offer.

Although JB Charleston's homes are privatized, all those interested in privatized housing at JB Charleston must still contact and apply for privatized housing through the Government Military Family Housing Management Office (HMO) first to ensure their stay on JB Charleston is a positive and well-informed one. We want to make sure you are aware of all your options and that any questions you may have are answered. We are now located on 101 North Davis Drive.

Traditionally, on-base housing was exclusively for active duty military members and their families, but that is not the case in our privatized community. Currently the following Other Eligible Tenants are able to reside in the privatized community: Unaccompanied Uniformed Services members who are at least senior airman with three or more years in service, National Guard and Reserve, federal civil service members, retired uniformed services members, retired civil service employees, permanent employees of DoD contractors and their families.

All incoming military and civilian personnel are required to check with the HMO prior to entering into any contractual arrangement for housing on or off base.

Dormitories

Dormitories are available on base for unaccompanied Airmen (E-1 through E-4 with less than 3 years of service). E-4s wishing to reside in dormitories with more than 3 years of service may voluntarily live in the dormitory on a space-available basis without BAH.

Currently there is not a waiting list for our dormitories. All space required residents (E-1 through E-4 with less than 3 years of service) will be given a room upon their arrival to JB Charleston. He will be able to provide you contact information for the First Sergeant of the organization you will be working for here at JB Charleston in the event you do not already have it and answer any other questions you may have concerning the dormitories.

JB Charleston dorms offer two different types of dorms; Quads and One-Plus-One dormitories. Each room has one closet with a vanity. The bathroom is shared with a suite mate. They are furnished with a full size captain bed, nightstand, chest of drawers, a desk and an entertainment stand.

Automated Housing Referral Network

The JB Charleston government housing office has joined other bases in implementing a new internet-based system that will make the search for available housing both convenient and easy for military members and their families.

The Automated Housing Referral Network is a nationwide, joint service, Department of Defense sponsored website that offers one-stop shopping of available housing to incoming military and their families at scores of bases across the country. The website, www.AHRN.com, directly connects service members with local property managers throughout the country, often facilitating a door-to-door move that saves time, expenses and headaches. When military members move, this is the site to check and see what housing choices are available in the area they will be settling. Ninety-five bases from all the different services are already online and available for review and more are continually being added.
