Joint Base Charleston to host annual Run the Runway 5K race

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. —

 

The annual Run the Runway 5K race, open to all Department of Defense members and the public, is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, at 8 a.m. at the JB Charleston-Air Base.

Come out and experience running on the JB Charleston runway. The 3.1 mile course is USA Track & Field certified and takes participants running past a fleet of U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.

Race Information:

Cost for event: $20 (including $2.25 online registration fee) and is open to all Department of Defense members and the public.

The race is scheduled to start at 8 a.m., but is subject to delay based on weather, military and civilian aircraft traffic. Please allow enough time for base access procedures and parking. The Rivers Gate opens at 6 a.m. for public access.

All participants must be able to maintain a 20-minute per mile pace on the course. Jogging strollers are welcome.

The 5K course on the JB Charleston flightline is the flattest course in South Carolina. Electronic bib timing included. Water will be available on course at the half-way point.

Race awards for overall fastest male/female and top three finishers in each male/female age group: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over. The award ceremony will follow the race. The top overall male and female runners will walk away with their own piece of the runway.

Packet Pickup: Non-DoD ID cardholders can pick up packets Friday, June 9, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., at Fleet Feet Sports, 881 Houston Northcutt Blvd, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464, (843) 606-2546.

DoD ID cardholders can pick up packets Friday, June 9, 5 a.m. – 7 p.m., at the Air Base Fitness & Sports Center, 205 West Hill Blvd, JB Charleston SC 29404, (843) 963-3347.

 

Race packets not picked up on Friday, June 9, will be available on race day from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m.

Base Access for event:

 

 

Non-DoD ID cardholder participants and spectators will only be allowed to enter the Air Base from the Rivers/Aviation Gate located on Perimeter Road, from 6 a.m. – noon only. DoD ID cardholders can enter through either the Rivers/Aviation or Dorchester gates. Please arrive early to allow time for access procedures.

Driving directions to Rivers/Aviation Gate:

 

 

From I-26, take exit 211, East Aviation. Proceed a short distance on E. Aviation to South Aviation Ave and turn Right. Follow S. Aviation Ave to the Rivers/Aviation Gate.

Once on base, follow signs for event parking, which will be located near the start and finish lines.

Additional Information:

Any and all property is subject to search at any time entering, exiting, or while on Joint Base Charleston property. Absolutely NO pets, weapons, knives, explosives, paint, skateboards, bikes, roller blades, glass bottles, alcohol, recreational or commercial vehicles allowed on the Air Base. Participants will be allowed to use strollers during the event but must maintain 20 minute/mile pace.

Online registration closes June 8, 2017 at 1:59 p.m. There will be race day registration which will only include a race bib, eligibility for a race award and refreshments. There will be no registration at packet pickup on Friday, June 9.

Media Information:

 

Media participants will have the opportunity to cover portions of the event and to interview Run the Runway 5K Race organizers as well as race participants and families.

Media interested in covering this event must RSVP by 12 p.m. Friday, June 9 to: 628.abw.pa@us.af.mil or (843) 963-5608. Media will need to arrive at the Dorchester Gate Visitor Center parking lot at 7 a.m. and meet with the Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs representative to be escorted on the installation.
