Elite Air Force Thunderbirds coming to the Lowcountry in 2018

050617 | Dec. 12, 2016

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. —

The U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds elite aerial demonstration team is returning to the Lowcountry to perform in 2018.

The Thunderbirds released their 2-year show schedule on Dec. 6 that includes a planned performance as part of Joint Base Charleston’s Air Expo on April 28, 2018. It will be the first Air Expo in the Lowcountry since 2011.

The Thunderbirds’ performance will be the headline performance of the one-day event, free and open to the general public as a joint venture of the community and JB Charleston.

Based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, the Thunderbirds are “America’s Ambassadors of Blue” and have been performing around the world since 1953.

The Thunderbirds have the privilege and responsibility to perform for people all around the world, displaying the pride, precision and professionalism of American Airmen. In every hour-long demonstration, the team combines years of training and experience with an attitude of excellence to showcase what the Air Force is all about.

Planning between Joint Base Charleston leadership and local community leaders has begun, as a way forward to improve upon the last Air Expo in 2011.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to open the gates and showcase our military servicemembers and the Joint base to our community,” said Col. Rob Lyman, JB Charleston commander. “It’s also an opportunity to say ‘thanks’ for all the support from our Lowcountry community.”
