JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - Hungarian refugees wait outside building 246 at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., in December of 1956. They were part of 279 refugess flown out of Eastern Europe by C-121 Constellations based at Charleston AFB. Bound for New Jersey, the C-121s were forced to take refuge in Charleston during bad weather over the Christmas holiday. Base members made the refugess feel at home, offering shelter, care, clothes, meals and a holiday gala.
