JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - 1st Lt. Christopher Long, 315th Maintenance Squadron maintenance flight commander, explains to his wife, Amanda, the history of the Air Force’s Summer White Mess Dress uniform during the Air Force Ball at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, S.C., Oct. 21, 2017. Uniforms were being drawn up for the Air Force even before it became its own branch back in 1947. However, a unique uniform wasn’t fully integrated until Sept. 1, 1950, three years after the Air Force’s founding.
