JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jet fuel gathers along a “boom” July 18, 2014, at a cleanup site where a drainage ditch enters the Ashley River. A multi-pronged team comprised of base civil engineers and members of the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Health and Environmental Control and Moran Environmental Recovery are working to remove the fuel, which traveled from the Air Base during a leak July 16. Most of the fuel gathered, and is being collected, upstream along the drainage ditch. An inspection of the Ashley River boom July 19 revealed no further fuel collection or pooling.
