After the war, Reid Cayce returned to the South, where he was honorably discharged Jan. 31, 1946. Using the G.I. Bill, he attended college before moving back to Charleston, S.C., with his wife and child. Mr. Cayce joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and served for 30 years, retiring as a chief quartermaster in 1983. Today, at 87 years old, Mr. Cayce lives alone, caring for his house and doing his own yard work, both of which are immaculate. (Courtesy photo)
