JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. –
The 628th Civil Engineer Squadron Team 1 and Team 2 squared off in intramural basketball March 4, 2014, at the Joint Base Charleston - Air Base fitness center.
The action started slowly in the first half as the tempo was marred by constant fouls resulting in a 16-8 score in favor of Team one going into the halftime break.
"We did well getting rebounds, boxing out, pushing the ball up the floor and playing defense," said Demetrious Daniel, 628th CES Team 1 point guard.
Both teams started quickly in the second half exchanging baskets as CES Team 2 looked to cut into their 8-point deficit.
Following a small run by Team 2 which cut the lead to only four, Andrew Harris of CES Team 1 provided a spark that allowed Team 1 to establish a double digit lead.
Half way through the second half, Team 1 sent their entire starting lineup to the bench. Seeing this as an opportunity to get back into the game, Team 2 began to light up the score board and quickly evaporated Team 1's large lead.
Noticing the backups were unable to keep pace with the quick tempo of Team 2, Team 1 swapped all their starters back into the game.
This mass substitution proved to be the difference in the game as a quick 6-0 run by Team 1 led to Team 2 taking a timeout.
Facing a 10-point deficit and five minutes left in the game, CES Team 2 seemed determined to erase their oppositions' lead and maintain their perfect record. However a crowd electrifying block by Jaymeson Garvin and the nonstop energy of Harris proved to be too much for Team 2 to overcome as they lost 50-36.
"In the second half, we finally were able to turn it on and play our style of basketball. Even though they're the best team in the league, we still showed up, played our best and we were able to beat them," added Daniel.
"We got out hustled and out rebounded tonight. We out run people to win and tonight we weren't doing that," said Kirt Wallace CES Team 2 coach and point guard.
