HAWC provides nutritional guidance to Airmen

By Airman 1st Class Clayton Cupit Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs

The Health and Wellness Center on Joint Base Charleston - Air Base, is here to help guide you to a healthy lifestyle.

The HAWC's mission is to cultivate a fit and healthy force. They achieve this through classes and services that address nutrition, exercise, tobacco cessation, wellness and relaxation.

And since March is National Nutrition Month, the HAWC has all the necessary tools to support you as you swap bad habits for positive lifestyle choices.

"We offer many nutrition classes every month," said Nikki Conley, HAWC health promotion manager.

Nutritional services include: meal planning for a healthy heart, weight management, diabetes prevention and management, nutrition for athletes and healthy cooking.

"We're also doing Commissary tours this month," said Conley. "We hold a booth at various fitness challenges on base and offered to do the Commissary tours for the squadrons who were interested," added Wendy Wyatt, HAWC dietitian.

While making smart food choices remains important, supplement safety goes hand in hand with nutrition.

For that, the HAWC refers to Operation Supplement Safety. OSS is a joint initiative between the Human Performance Resource Center and the Department of Defense to educate servicememebers, retirees, family members, leaders, healthcare providers, and DOD civilians about dietary supplements, and how to choose them wisely.

"This is a great place to learn about supplements and how to use and choose them safely," said Conley.

You can visit the OSS website at hprc-online.org/dietary-supplements/OPSS for more information on supplemental safety.

"We want people to come in and take advantage of the programs we offer," said Conley.

The HAWC is located behind the JB Charleston - Air Base Fitness and Sports Center in building 225. Their hours of operations are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 963-4087 for more information.
