Medical group to conduct youth physicals

By Capt. Daniel Yzaguirre | 437th Medical Group | August 01, 2007

CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Before participating in team sports, children must receive clearance from a doctor to make sure they are physically fit to play the sport.

The 437th Medical Group will be conducting youth physicals for family members ages nine to 19 the afternoon of Aug. 8. Call the appointment line at 963-6880 to make an appointment so the child can be prepared to play sports this upcoming school season.

The physical demands placed on the body during sports can be rigorous. That's why children need to have a sports physical prior to participation in competitive team sports.

During the physical, the medical staff checks height, weight, blood pressure, listens to the heart and lungs, looks into the ears, nose and throat, checks eyesight and finally, tests strength and flexibility. The medical staff also discusses any medical questions or concerns about the child's health in relation to the sport they want to play.

Additional youth physical appointments will be made available as the demand dictates. The 437 MDG will advertise accordingly.
