JOINT BASE CHARLESTON S.C –
The Outdoor and Family Recreation Center at Joint Base Charleston- Air Base opened its newly renovated $1.4 million facility, Oct 18.
The Shady Oaks Family Camp has almost doubled the number of campsites from 23 to 43, while adding electricity and sewer hook-ups at each Recreational Vehicle station.
"The additions to the camping facility make Shady Oaks the newest and best campground in the Air Force." said Merril Troxell, JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation manager.
Not only has 50 amps of electricity and sewer service been added to each of the sites, but there is now WiFi, a small tent area, a convenience center that includes washers and dryers and all parking spots for the RV's are concrete.
Long time guests, LaVerne and Betty Hurlbut have been visiting the Shady Oaks campground since the early 1980s, and camp here every year before heading to Asheville, N.C. Once they heard the camp sites were being upgraded, they called everyday asking when they could visit what they call, "One of the prettiest cities in America and one of the best camping facilities we have seen."
A one-night stay at the campground costs $20 for an RV site and all the sites are rented on a first come, first serve basis.
The Outdoor and Family Recreation Center also has a full range of gear for rent such as grills, canoes, shrimp and crab nets, campers and boats. The Shady Oaks Family Camp also has information on discounted tickets for sightseeing and attractions in the Low Country.
