Base welcomes new commander during assumption of command

By Airman Melissa White 437th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 437th Medical Support Squadron welcomed a new commander during an assumption of command ceremony June 19 at the Charleston Club.

Lt. Col. James Barber, former 6th Medical Group TRICARE Operations and Patient Administration Flight commander at MacDill AFB, Fl., replaced Lt. Col. James Loe who temporarily filled the position of commander after Lt. Col. Kenneth Hill retired in April. Colonel Loe has returned to the position of 437th Medical Group Dental Flight chief and deputy group commander.

Colonel Barber was born in Savannah, Ga., but was raised in Winchester, Tenn. He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1992 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. In 1996, he received a master's degree in business administration from St. Mary's University in San Antonio.

Dances with Wolves

What is your major pet peeve?
My major pet peeve is bad drivers.

Who is your favorite author?
Steven Coonts

What is your favorite quote?
"I will give my all for Tennessee today," which is the quote inside the University of Tennessee locker room.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe it as pragmatic because I prefer for things to be staright to the point with facts.

Who is your role model and why?
U. S. Navy Cmdr. John Collins, creator of Ironman Triathlon, is my role model. Anybody that can swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then run 26.2 miles in a day for fun has got to be the world's toughest role model.

What was your most memorable assignment and why?
My most memorable assignment was my last assignment at MacDill AFB, Fla. It's hard to argue with any Florida assignment, but supporting staff and friends along the way made it most memorable.

How do you feel about coming to Charleston?
I'm from the south, so coming to Charleston is like coming home.

What are your initial plans as the new commander of the 437 MDSS?
I want to learn as much as possible about the C-17 mission and develop medical plans to support the crews.

What are your expectations of your Airmen?
I want them to never settle for second place, keep everything in perspective and take care of each other.
