'Tis the season for influenza

By Staff Sgt. Angelique N. Smythe 451st AEW Public Affairs

Influenza vaccine shots are available now.

Although members of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing can and should visit the Camp Samek medical clinic to receive their flu shots (not mist), everyone is encouraged to practice proper hygiene methods to prevent the spread of germs which could lead to flu-like symptoms.

"Our primary prevention is the vaccine, which everyone is required to get," said Lt. Col. Laura Brodhag, 451st Air Expeditionary Wing Flight Surgeon.  "But another thing people can do to protect themselves is bus their areas."

If sharing telephones, keyboards or touching doorknobs in a community area, wash hands frequently or use wet hand sanitizers.

Before using a phone, first wipe off the receiver.

Avoid having community food bowls, such as popcorn or candy, as most people will place their palms in the bowls, potentially causing a spread of germs.

"Anytime you touch your face, even if it's just to wipe your forehead, you should be washing your hands," said Colonel Brodhag.

Stay healthy.

Exercise.

Eat healthy.  And take lots of vitamins, such as Vitamin C and Zinc.

Also, be sure to get ample rest as sleep deprivation is one factor that can wear out a person's immune system.

"Get your rest eight hours a day," said Colonel Brodhag.

Anyone who feels they may have symptoms of a fever, sore throat, cough, etc., may visit the Camp Samek medical clinic between the hours of 7 to 9:30 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m.
