JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - Capt. Nicholas Krause, 8th Airlift Squadron, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., goes over a map during a mission-planning meeting here July 19, 2018, in order to identify the visual cues used to perform a Pilot-Directed Airdrop. For PDAs, the C-17 includes an additional crewmember who is responsible for timing the airdrop based on visual cues on the ground. Given the speed and altitude of a C-17 during an airdrop, being even a second off on their release time could put the cargo about 85 yards from its intended location.
