K-9 Veterans Day is celebrated annually on March 13, the official birthday of the U.S. Army K-9 Corps, which began in 1942. Dogs have been used for patrol, sentry duty, bomb detection, drug detection, search and rescue missions and as therapy animals. Congress passed “Robby’s Law” in 2000 which allowed these dogs to be adopted by their handlers’ or qualified applicants. Joint Base Charleston 628th SFS has nine K-9s; all are either German shepherds or Belgian Malinois.
