060218 | Feb. 23, 2018

JOINT BASE CHALESTON, S.C. —

Two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters assigned to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302, Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, are scheduled to conduct training operations over Joint Base Charleston Feb. 23-24 from 2-10 p.m. daily.

"We will be exercising our squadron deployment capabilities and conducting routine pilot flight training over the Charleston area," said Marine Corps Maj. Clayton Piersall, director of safety and standardization for HMHT-302.

"Our mission is to train entry level copilots and crew chiefs on the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter. Part of that training includes instrument flights, confined area landings and familiarization flights among other training objectives. The basis of our operations this weekend is to have our replacement aircrew plan and execute flights away from our home base of operations and execute flight training objectives."

The Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron is tasked with conducting combat capable helicopter flight training for all CH-53E Super Stallion Marine Corps pilots and aircrew. All basic, conversion and refresher pilots as well as aircrew receive assault support training in the CH-53E to prepare them for follow on assignment in the Fleet Marine Force.
