JOINT BASE CHARLESON, S.C. - Base members get food from a buffet line during the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Luncheon May 30, 2018, at the Air Base Chapel Annex. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrated throughout the month of May, honors Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The large majority of the track for the railroad was laid by Chinese immigrants.
