Chief Master Sgt. John Gallo places the retired 17th Airlift Squadron guidon flag back into the flag stand during the squadron's inactivation ceremony June 25, 2015 at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. As part of the President’s Defense Budget for FY15, one of Charleston’s four active-duty C-17 flying squadron's was designated for inactivation. Prior to the ceremony a heritage flight was conducted and allowed for distinguished visitors of the squadron to take one last flight. Col. Fred Boehm, the 437th Operations Group commander presided over the ceremony and reflected on the history of the squadron. Once Lt. Col. Paul Theriot, 17th AS commander passed the guidon back to Boehm, they then retired the flag, officially inactivating the 17th AS. In attendance at the ceremony were many of the squadron's former commander's including Maj. Gen. (ret) Ron Ladnier, who commanded the squadron when it stood up as the first operational C-17 squadron.
