Joint Base Charleston Hosts Leadership Reasonable Accommodation Training

By 628th Air Base Wing Equal Opportunity Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs

Many by-law programs are available for leaders to optimize the workforce and ensure inclusive practices.  Navigating the intricacies of all the programs and requirements can be challenging.  To provide education and training for the Reasonable Accommodations Program, Joint Base Charleston championed the second deliberate leadership development initiative to provide two in-person sessions on November 10th, 2021.

The featured speaker is Ms. Kendra Shock, the Air Force Disability Program Manager, seven-time Air-Force level award winner.  She will educate the attendees on the requirements and process of the Reasonable Accommodation Program as outlined in Air Force Instruction 36-2710 with a specific focus on COVID19 nuances.  Ms. Shock explains how Reasonable Accommodation (RA) is any modification or adjustment to a job, an employment practice, or the work environment that enables a qualified individual with a disability to enjoy equal employment opportunities.  She emphasizes Disability Accommodation is a case-specific and fact-specific process, and Reasonable Accommodation is an interactive process between the individual with a disability and management.

The training serves a two-fold purpose: (1) create awareness and understanding of current Reasonable Accommodations regulatory guidelines and processing procedures under a COVID19 scope; and (2) promote equal employment opportunity, diversity and inclusion in the federal workforce, and building a model federal workplace that attract and retain talent from all segments of society.

Reasonable Accommodations are often a creative a win-win scenario – management needs to accomplish the mission through specific jobs and skill sets, and the employee wants to contribute to mission accomplishment.  Reasonable Accommodation is a tool you can use to provide what employees need to do the job we must do.  As we have proven time and again, our mission never falters… and we will not fail because of the people conducting the mission set.
