Command Chief's Corner

By Chief Master Sgt. Melvin Willis 437th Airlift Wing commnad chief master sergeant

Good morning team! In spite of the frigid temperatures we have experienced over the last couple weeks, the Lowcountry is still at the top of my list for places to work and play. I must admit I have gotten a little spoiled with the moderate winters we have here. However, as my wife reminds me, it is winter and as such, we should expect some colder temperatures; as always, she is right.

With the cooler temperatures it is even more critical that we hydrate properly and dress appropriately, which for many may mean keeping a good pair of gloves handy. I would hate for you to walk around the base with your hands stuffed inside your pockets because they are cold. Plus, AFI 36-2903 prohibits that type of behavior and I know all of you definitely abide by that instruction.

Last week the Base Chapel, in conjunction with the Charleston AFB African-American Heritage Committee, hosted this year's Black History Month observance with a kickoff breakfast. The committee provided an exceptionally educational and entertaining program to get the ball rolling on what promises to be a great month of activities. There are several more wonderful events on tap, so keep your eyes and ears open for them and mark your calendars accordingly.

Earlier this week our First Sergeants Council hosted the February Diamond Sharp ceremony. Once again, the cream rose to the top as four exceptional Team Charleston Airmen were recognized for their dedication, leadership and professionalism. Staff Sgt. Fred Furches, 373rd Training Squadron Detachment 5; Airman 1st Class Joseph Caprio III, 437th Logistics Readiness Squadron; Airman 1st Class Kristine Tritten, 17th Airlift Squadron; and Airman 1st Class Michael Dunnigan, 437th Civil Engineer Squadron, stood proudly as their respective first sergeants told everyone in attendance why they were being honored. Thank you to everyone who came out to support these professionals, especially the family members who were able to attend. Also, I must offer a special thank you to AAFES, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union, Bank of America and the 437th Services Squadron. Their continued sponsorship of this program makes it even more meaningful for our honorees.

Congratulations are definitely in order to the graduates of Airman Leadership School class 07-B, a great group of Air Force leaders. As they say back home, you "done good." You should be very proud of this accomplishment; one you worked extremely hard to achieve. The legacy you leave our Air Force will be defined by the Airmen you mentor and supervise now and in the future. You have been prepared to leave a positive legacy; the rest is now up to you.

Team Charleston - One family, one mission, one fight!
